LASIK – The Day Of
10:55AM:
I arrived at the TLC Laser Vision Center ten minutes late for my scheduled appointment. All the necessary forms and legal documents took five minutes to fill, and I was taken to the prep room for eye cleanup and anesthesia.
Nervous? Umm… no, I can’t say that I was nervous, I was actually more anxious to get my eyes sliced.
11:05AM:
The operating room was more like a server room, dark, AC chilled, with a huge machine humming in the middle of the room. Dr. Furlong and his half dozen blue-coated assistants were each at their station preparing for my treatment. Rapid snapping sound filled the room; I was told that the CIBA LASIK machine was calibrating its lasers prior to my procedure.
Like I said, I wasn’t nervous, but the butterflies in my stomach were definitely flapping as I laid down on the operating bench and was slide underneath the LASIK machine; all I could see were lights – red blinking lights, green lights, blue lights, circle of fluorescent lights; it felt like I was being adopted and operated by aliens. It was a bit scary, I crossed my legs, clinched my fists, and took couple deep breaths to calm myself down.
The operation begun immediately; Dr. Furlong was really good with informing me what was going on throughout the process. He dropped few more numbing eye drops; peeled my eye lids back and taped them down; mounted the cornea cutter to create the flap; shaped the cornea with the laser, flip back the flap and... Voila! Perfect vision in less than 3 minutes!!!
11:15AM:
Less than ten minutes from the time I lay down on the operating bench I was asked to stand up and open up my eyes, I can see!!! In the darkness of the operating room, I can read clearly make out the displays on the instruments across the room!! Isn’t technology wonderful?!
11:28AM:
After waiting in the lobby for roughly 10 minutes, my baby Viv picked me up and we were on our way home!
p.s. I watched a video of the LASIK procedure few months ago, and for those of you who are thinking about LASIK, I advice you not to watch it. I was a bit scared during the procedure since I knew exactly what they were doing to my eyes every step along the way. Otherwise, I would have to say that it was a painless process, nothing to it! Recommendation:
